We have witnessed an amazing desire to learn by the people of Sagubo in the Philippines. A sewing project was started there that has recently seen eight determined, hard working graduates. Just to get to class, the students are required to walk mountain paths, often in rain, up to 4 hours a day to get to and from class, three days a week for four months! This is determination. This is Nena's sewing room.
Our organization has facilitated a sweet partnership between the Christ Community Lutheran School in St. Louis and the Kawete, Uganda counterpart (CCLS-U). While the school in St. Louis was able to raise funds to help pay teachers salaries in Uganda, many other donors continue to provide support for much of the school’s operating expenses. This includes paying school staff, such as Violet, our project coordinator.
A powerful program is as work in Uganda, called Kyosiga Community Christian Association for Development (KACCAD).
Derrick, the director of KACCAD, has had a heart for service his entire life. He dropped out of school because of his mother’s encouragement to help the community. He saw to it that his siblings got an education even though it meant that he never finished his degree. One of his priorities is to raise the standard of living of underprivileged people in Wakiso District through vocational skill development and by providing start-up resources for income generation.
I’ve learned that reaching out into the local community with the love of Jesus can take many different forms. While I have been involved with countless ministry outreaches over the years, last fall was my first time to minister through tutoring children in their school work. I, with a few of our students, began to meet with five young siblings from a second-generation, Asian-Buddhist emigrant family each week in their home.
