As the Body of Christ we are so clearly called to care for the poor and downtrodden. Care for them in material ways, yes, but also care for them spiritually. Street evangilization embraces both of those and it's amazing the response we get.
Jesus spent the majority of his time with people considered "on the streets" in ancient times: the sick (Jn 9:6ff; Lk 17:12ff; Mt 9:35), the poor beggars, the crippled (Mk 2:1ff), those who were unclean (Mt 9:20-22), those who were rejected by society. Many times it was these people who most urgently sought the health, restoration, and the good news of the Gospel. And we witnessed this same thing here in Minneapolis.
There was one time when my team evangelized in downtown Minneapolis, passing out sandwiches and praying for different people we met. I was with a group of three girls and understandably, they were a little timid at first. As the day progressed, however, they quickly started to come out of their shell. Before long, the girls were quick to go up to people and ask if they wanted prayer.
That day we saw God work in the hearts of the people we met. While the majority of the people that lived on the streets asked for prayers for others and not for themselves, there was this one man that asked for prayer for his relationship with Lord. It was really awesome to see that this man wanted to know God more and to strengthen his relationship with Him.
God changed all of us in those two hours of street evangelism: the girls, myself, and I believe that particular man. I know that it was great experienced for them and myself. That morning we truly saw God move through Minneapolis and the hearts of the church team.
