Christ Community Lutheran School has two branches. One is located in Kawete, Uganda (CCLSU) and it's sister-school is located in St. Louis. Although these schools share a name, they look and function a bit differently. In Uganda, the teachers create posters that are placed around the classrooms in place of textbooks or school manuals. Chalk boards are painted on the cement walls. All information is written on the board by the teacher and copied by the students in their notebooks.
This method of teaching is effective and we are grateful that the children have a place to learn from people who care for them. We currently have fourteen teachers and staff at CCLSU. Currently, however, we are facing the fact that we must pay higher salaries to attract and keep good teachers.
For instance, Violet Nanono, our project coordinator in Uganda for 6 years, lives in Kampala and travels by bus to Kawete every week. She makes this trip on a crowded bus or van, sometimes taking two or more hours one way to Iganga. Then she rents a motorcycle to go back and forth from Kawete, staying in a hotel in Iganga. Violet is loved and respected in the village, and supervises all our activities. She looks after a lot of the children personally, notifying us of needs and concerns at the school as they arise. She is priceless! This just gives a small glimpse into the dedication of our staff and teachers. We truly value them and recognize their importance in the education and well-being of our children. Our only prayer is that we could continue to sustain them as they have given so much of their time and energy to be with us.
